Beyond Grateful

A fundraiser was held last Friday night to benefit little old me. I was overwhelmed by the number of people who donated items, money and their valuable time to make this event such a success. I think my mother made sure the whole town was there and had all types of people ready and willing to volunteer. So many people approached me just to tell me how much they love my mother; Ditto.

There were so many who wanted to help there was not enough work to go around. My Aunt Marie made sure the event went smoothly from start to finish and generously gave the biggest prize of the evening—a powerful gas grill with side burners. My aunt’s two daughters, cousins Bridget and Maureen, spent countless hours helping to organize the event and even donated items themselves. Then there is my sister Ruth; I call her the natural born sales person. She modeled a necklace that was donated by her friend Kelly and made sure each and every woman saw it. Ruth was in charge of the selling raffle tickets for the 50, 50 raffle and, because so many tickets were sold, tension was high by the end of the night when the winning ticket was drawn. Oh-and did I mention-my gorgeous sister also donated a Keurig complete with a fully stocked carousel of coffees, teas, and hot cocoa.

There are so many people to thank I do not believe it will be possible for me to name everyone. There was my Uncle Frank and his wife Cyndi who always send me lovely cards wishing me well. They donated toward the highly coveted 42’’ flat screen color television.

People I had never even met before were there helping in every way they could. Stephanie told me her own personal cancer survivor story and proudly showed me the pink ribbon tattoo on her ankle. Ann made a beautifully crafted oversized card with pink ribbons on it and many people wrote well wishes and signed it.

My uncle Jim was behind the scenes cooking up some of the tastiest meatballs and ziti ever eaten. My brother Randy helped donate the aforementioned television. Family, friends and people I have never even met turned out to this fundraiser in droves. The money raised will pay off the bulk of my remaining hospital and medical bills. This event lifted my family in every way imaginable. The spirit and good will of the people who were there raised my spirits and touched my soul. I will never be able to repay all these wonderful, kind and generous people.

God is great, life is good, and I am so thankful.

Cathy sent you a hug.

Wow! How great to see a family and community come together for such a great cause! Congratulations on the success!

Wonderful! Sounds so exciting. What a great family you have :)
xoxo

Wow! That’s awesome, Kathy! It’s wonderful you have so many supporters and people who care about you. You say that everyone loves your mom, but it sounds like they’re pretty darned fond of you as well. And with good reason, as you are a very special person and deserve all the good that comes your way. Hugs! Ann

That is wonderful. It is amazing what a community can do!

OMG Cathy. What a fantastic evening and story to share.
I have this image of you being surrounded by a blanket of love and affection.
And isn’t it grand that you’ll “never be able to repay” their generosity? ...It totally frees you up to not give it another thought; just bask in all those love rays.
Thanks for sharing this most excellent Life-Is-Good story, Cathy. Your family and friends are awesome.
Hugs, Nicole

Thank you all for your beautiful comments. I have been so busy lately, I am afraid I have neglected my replies.

I really do appreciate the kind comments.

Thank you!

Bradycardia

Either I am a world class athlete or my heart needs help, and judging by my latest attempts at exercise, I am led to believe my heart needs attention.

I went to the emergency room last Friday for another round of the my usual (saline solution) and while I was relaxing in a room receiving my injection one of the machines kept making this unpleasant beeping noise. I automatically assumed the noises were caused by faulty hospital equipment. I was later told the machine makes this noise each and every time someone’s heart rate drops below 45 beats per minute. The problem is the machine was beeping regularly. I am told this low heart rate is called Bradycardia. Now the issue is what is causing this suddenly low heart rate. My oncologist blames the thyroid issue, the Endocrinologist blames the Herceptin my Oncologist is giving me, and my Primary doctor makes no pretense about knowing anything.

I am unsure what to do next. Has anyone else had this issue?

Cathy, Nicole (Lady Of The Larynx) threw a punch at your cancer.
Stacey sent you a prayer.

i haven’t had that issue but I will pray hard that it’s nothing serious.
hugs

Hi Cathy—
I have had bradycardia/tachycardia, which is a heart rate that fluctuates between too slow and too fast. I had a 24-hr Holter monitor test done about a year and a half ago and my heart was doing all kinds of crazy things—slow one minute, fast the next. I was referred to a cardiologist who put me through some testing and could find nothing wrong. I also had this issue about 8 years ago. I am quite active and do lots of aerobic activities, which might explain my low heart rate, which has dipped into the 40’s on a regular basis. I’m not sure what causes the rapid heart rate for me. Anyway, I think your best bet is to see a cardiologist for a work-up. I don’t know what other symptoms you are having but I would get light-headed and had chest tightness, along with shortness of breath. If you have any such symptoms, please do not delay in getting a cardiologist to check you out. I hope all will be well.

Martha

Thanks Martha. Yes-I am light-headed, have some shortness of breath and some chest tightness. My primary wants me to visit him tomorrow to see if a referral is warranted. I will insist on one. I say better safe than sorry.

I appreciate the advice!

You’re welcome! If you want to read my blogs about my heart problems, check them out. I posted about them in November and December 2010.

I’m sorry to hear this and hope you get an answer. I’m glad Martha knows something about this and can offer some advice. Hopefully its something easy to determine and fix or monitor. Will keep you in my thoughts.

I think you should see a cardiologist and have some tests done. I have had Atrial Fibrillation, which is an abnormal heart rhythm since July 2010. My heart rate goes to high, especially with activity, but sometimes it goes too low, also. I don’t think they know what caused it in my case. I take medication for it which seem to control, or at least help, it most of the time. I have had chemo twice, in 1994 and 2006. I think it probably came from that last chemo. Good Luck. Take care. My love, thoughts and prayers will be with you.

Hi Joyce:

I will tell my doc tomorrow that I need to see a cardiologist. My heart rate has never been this low before in fact, when I was in the hospital last October they said I had the opposite problem (heart rate was too fast) but they blamed everything on dehydration.

I appreciate the advice and support.

God bless,

Gosh, hope they can get this figured out for you soon! I mean, enough already!

Golly Cathy, Sounds like it was one of those “lucky” machine mishaps that set you on this new heart rate exploration journey.
I too am glad Martha had some experience with this.
I’m hoping you get some good news soon. ...Like how your finely tuned precious system just needs a little tweaking to smooth out your comfort zone.
...Ever feel like “Dora the Explorer?”
Hugs, Nicole

I do feel a bit like Dora. I have an MRI tomorrow—my oncologist says she wants to rule out a brain tumor.
Great! I am trying not to get too excited about any of these tests and just hoping I show up at the right doctors office at the right date and time.

Thank you!

The only thing I know is I had to go through extensive stress testing before chemo because it does damage the heart. I think that is where I would start. Good luck and my prayers are with you. I just started having thyroid problems but that God my heart is doing good.
